Last week we lost my daughter’s hamster Maui, dying of old age at two years. Now, somehow there was a hamster newhamster size void in my heart. SERIOUSLY?!? I couldn’t believe it either!

Heading to the pet store, we found four hamster brothers all together in one cage. My daughter asked me to read them, and two of them in particular had very sweet personalities and seemed like a good fit for our family.  Frederick was all brown, very lively, sure of himself and liked to communicate. The other, Sundae, had a sweet demeanor, was timid in spirit and was seeking a connection with others. Sundae was white with dark brown splotches and looked like vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce drizzled on him.

We got the hamsters home and Frederick eagerly explored his new surroundings. Sundae, on the other hand, looked like he was in shock. I put my hand on his cage, spoke to him and asked Reiki to ease his transition.

Sundae snuggled in the corner next to my hand and lay quietly. I thought his reaction extremely odd, but it reinforced my belief that he was seeking connection with others. Later that night, Sundae came to me in spirit and sat cuddled up just below my left shoulder and was very frightened.  I told him he could stay with me in spirit and I would keep him safe.  I figured there was a reason that my hamster size void was filled with this particular hamster.

The next morning, my daughter was playing with Sundae on the bathroom floor. She had carefully covered up a small crack between the door and the tile floor, as she didn’t want Sundae to make an escape.  She did not know, however, about the hole at the base of the bathroom cabinet.  Sundae promptly found it, followed his hamster instincts and quickly got himself wedged between the cabinet and the drywall.  Of course we had no way of seeing him or being able to retrieve him.

As we had to leave for school, we left Sundae in his dark cabinet jail and left a trail of treats leading back to his open cage. Late afternoon we came back home, but Sundae was nowhere to be seen. I began in earnest to try to locate him with the hopes that he had not travelled behind the drywall into parts unknown.  As it was still light out and hamsters are nocturnal, I figured we would not hear of Sundae’s whereabouts until approximately 10 o’clock that night.

I sat in desperation in the bathroom and called upon Reiki and Divine Mother for healing of this precarious situation. The last thing we wanted was for Sundae to perish within the walls of our home only to be found later via the smell of decaying hamster.

As I was calling on my Guides for help, I heard scuffling and gnawing behind the cabinet! Sundae had woken up and I was able to pinpoint his exact location.  Through the use of mirrors and flashlights I was able to ascertain that Sundae was wedged in an area about 1 1/2 inches wide by 2 feet deep.  I was able to see that he was trying to jump out of the same hole that he had gotten himself into and that he was not able to do so.

Enter my husband and the power tools. As holes were being drilled through the wood cove base to enlarge the hole for Sundae to escape, the sound of the electric drill was deafening. I could feel Sundae in spirit huddled up against my chest completely frightened.  If a hamster’s spirit could scream, I was feeling it.  Out of desperation, I called out again to Reiki asking for energetic healing for the situation.  I asked for what I call “Reiki Calm” for Sundae while the drilling was going on as I was worried about heart failure from the stress and the noise. I personally began to feel a slight sense of calm.

Continuing to agitatedly plead with Reiki, I explained that Sundae had come into our family for a reason less than 24 hours prior and that it was just wrong that this particular animal should be trapped with our being unable to save it…

I very clearly heard the words, “I’ve got it!”  And no, the voice wasn’t from my husband! OK, I get it. Stand down, Ruth!  I realized that had I listened to the calming energy I was receiving, I would have understood that Reiki was already in play and was making sure that things were moving forward in order to rescue Sundae.

My husband finished drilling the escape hatch for Sundae.  I was able to finally see the little hamster in his entirety.  He had been sitting about 3 inches from where the extremely loud drilling was taking place and he looked like he was in the deepest sleep. I watched him breathe; at first I was afraid that he was in shock and dehydrated from being in the cupboard all day.  I then got the sense that he had, in fact, been protected by Reiki, and had slept through the loud drilling.  Now that’s what I call Reiki Calm!

Now it was up to Sundae to squeeze his way out to freedom. My daughter’s friend lured him out with a fresh strawberry and was able to get a hold of him and secure him in his cage.

Lesson for my daughter: never play with the hamster on the floor.

Lesson for me: when you ask for guidance from Divine Mother and Reiki and you feel the sense of calm, trust in that, and believe that They’ve got things covered!
